Совсем недавно концепция отдельного пространства для сознания снова заявила о себе. Мохамад Кубейсси и его коллеги оперировали мозг пациента с тяжелой формой эпилепсии, состояние которого вынудило врачей прибегнуть к инвазивной нейрохирургии. По воле случая они обнаружили, что стимуляция определенной области (claustrum) обратимо погружала пациента в бессознательное состояние (после прекращения стимуляции он вернулся в нормальное состояние). Казалось, ученые обнаружили если не место, где «сосредоточено» сознание, то, по крайней мере, центр управления, о котором размышлял некоторое время назад Фрэнсис Крик. Неудивительно, что от этой идеи при дальнейшем анализе пришлось отказаться из-за множества проблем и несостыковок. Первая из них просто техническая: в исследовании отсутствует необходимое количество повторений, участвовал всего один испытуемый, имеющий к тому же аномалии функционирования мозга. Таким образом, критерий достоверности исследования не выполняется. Кроме того, поскольку полностью здоровые люди никогда не будут подвержены инвазивной хирургии головного мозга, даже при наличии удовлетворительной выборки мы все равно не сможем утверждать, что выводы верны применительно к здоровому мозгу. Вторая проблема заключается в опасности ошибочной интерпретации. Как мы можем сказать наверняка, что наблюдаемый эффект уникален, пока не повторим опыт на множестве других участков мозга? Третья проблема вращается вокруг того, как мы определяем сознание. Пациент в исследовании Кубейсси не был без сознания в том же смысле, как и если бы он находился под воздействием общей анестезии или спал: скорее, стимуляция привела к «полному отключению волевого поведения и невосприимчивости», что больше похоже на транс. Четвертая проблема связана с чрезмерной зависимостью от метафоры при интерпретации данных. Фрэнсис Крик, чьи идеи якобы подтверждены данным исследованием, сравнивал claustrum с «дирижером в оркестре», координирующим все другие области мозга. Но что это на самом деле означает?
